Dental Implants

Dental Implants at Smiles by Shrenna Clifton, DDSWhen you lose your teeth, even if it is only one tooth, it is essential that you have them replaced. Without your teeth, your entire life is affected. Simple tasks like eating and speaking become difficult. The quality of your smile diminishes, and your confidence soon follows. Even your jawbone is impacted, growing weaker from lack of tooth stimulation. At Smiles by Shrenna Clifton, DDS, we can replace your missing teeth with dental implants.

Components of Dental Implants

Dental implants are a unique, revolutionary, treatment for replacing missing teeth. They involve a surgical procedure during which small titanium posts are implanted directly into the jawbone. The whole restoration is made up of three pieces.
•  The actual implant. The implant itself is the titanium post. It is placed directly into the jawbone and integrates into the bone as you heal. The bone fuses around the post to turn it into a stable support, replacing the root of your natural tooth.
•  The abutment. This is the connector, which is placed at the end of the implant. It acts as a stabilizer for your replacement tooth.
•  A dental crown. The crown is the actual replacement tooth itself. Usually made from ceramic, it restores the visible section of your missing tooth. It not only restores your smile but also enables you to bite, chew and speak normally again.

Options for Everyone

Dental implants are quite versatile and can be used to suit a treat of different tooth replacement needs.
•  Single tooth. A single tooth implant is one that replaces one tooth. It uses one post to support a single crown.
•  Multiple teeth. Also commonly called an implant supported bridge, a multiple tooth implant replaces two or more consecutive missing teeth. One or more implants support your new crowns.
•  Implant supported dentures. If you have lost all of the teeth in either your upper or lower jaw, an implant supported denture can help. 6 to 8 implants are used to support an entire arch of new crowns.
•  All-on-4® Treatment Concept. If you have lost all of the teeth in a single arch, but you have also lost a significant amount of bone mass, you may not be a candidate for an implant supported denture. Instead of getting a bone graft, the All-on-4® Treatment Concept uses four implants that are placed to take advantage of your natural bone mass.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants provide numerous benefits.
•  They look, feel and function just like your natural teeth.
•  Improved digestion.
•  Greater comfort. Your crowns are supported by the implants, rather than your gums. This relieves pressure from the gum tissue.
•  Unlike bridges, which require alteration to healthy teeth to accommodate the restoration, your healthy teeth remain untouched.
•  The crowns can be cared for just like your natural teeth.
•  The implants function like the roots of your teeth and stimulate your jawbone. This helps to prevent bone loss, keeping your jaw strong and healthy.
•  They are permanent. The bone fuses to the implants, integrating them into the bone. They do not need to be replaced unless you are faced with a severe, and often rare, issue.

Are there any drawbacks to dental implants?

Implants provide countless benefits. However, they do have a few drawbacks as well. We will help you to weigh the pros and cons of implants to make the best decision for you. Drawbacks of implants include:
•  They require surgery.
•  The recovery period can take several weeks to several months.
•  You may require a bone graft before implant surgery.
•  They can be more expensive than other restorative options.

Dental implants do not just restore the functions of your missing teeth; they also help to greatly improve your quality of life. For more information, and to find out if you are a candidate for dental implants, call Smiles by Shrenna Clifton, DDS today at (470) 400-2001.
