Tooth loss has a major impact on your entire life. Even losing just one or two teeth can have a significant impact. Suddenly, tasks that were once simple, such as eating and speaking, become more challenging. Food gets lodged in the empty space, causing discomfort and increasing the risk for tooth decay and gum disease. The appearance of your smile is diminished. Your teeth may even shift out of their natural alignment, a consequence that presents a variety of different issues. Replacing your missing tooth, or teeth is essential for restoring your quality of life. At Smiles by Shrenna Clifton, DDS, we offer porcelain bridges to replace your missing teeth.
What is a bridge?
A bridge is a restoration designed to replace missing teeth. More specifically, it is commonly used to replace one to three consecutive missing teeth in any given area of the mouth. There are a few different types of bridges, including Maryland, cantilever and fixed. Fixed bridges are the most frequently used. It is a single unit, made up of your replacement, or pontic, teeth between two crowns. The crowns anchor the bridge onto the adjacent healthy teeth referred to as abutment teeth, which provide support and stability for the restoration.
Why get a porcelain bridge?
While bridges can be made from a variety of different materials, our bridges are made out of porcelain. This is not the delicate porcelain associated with fine dishes. Our porcelain bridges are strong and durable, able to stand up to normal daily use. Porcelain can be made to perfectly match the color of your natural teeth. The material also closely mimics the light reflection properties of natural enamel. These factors provide a seamless appearance. Other benefits of bridges include:
The Placement of Your Porcelain Bridge
The process for placing your porcelain bridge is similar to the placement of crowns. It typically takes two appointments to complete. During your first appointment, we prepare the abutment teeth. After a thorough oral exam, during which we confirm that a bridge is truly the best solution for your needs, we administer a local anesthetic. The anesthetic ensures that you do not feel any discomfort while we prepare the teeth. After the anesthetic takes effect, we remove a portion of the enamel from each abutment tooth, reducing it in size. This is done so that your bridge will fit naturally and comfortably into your mouth. Finally, we take impressions. These impressions are sent to a lab, where your bridge is designed and created.
It can often take up to two weeks for your final bridge to be finished and sent back. You will be provided with a temporary bridge to wear in the meantime. When the bridge is ready, you return for your second appointment. We first check to make sure that the bridge fits properly, and is the right color. If everything looks good, we cement the restoration into place on the abutment teeth.
Even if you are only missing one or two teeth, replacing them is important for restoring the functions of your mouth, your appearance, and your quality of life.
